Der Name Ard na Sidhe bedeutet „Hügel der Feen“ und bezieht sich auf den kleinen, baumbestandenen Hügel in der Nähe des Hotels. Ard na Sidhe befindet sich auf einem felsigen Hang, mit Blick über den Caragh Lake im Westen. Das Anwesen wurde 1958 von dem inzwischen verstorbenen Dr. Liebherr erworben und begrüßte zwei Jahre später seine ersten Gäste. Ursprünglich wurde es von Lady Gordon, einer irischen Lady adliger Herkunft, erbaut und man sagt, dass der Geist von Bess Stokes, einer ihrer Vorfahrinnen, noch immer dort herumspukt. Lady Gordon erwarb den Grund, auf dem das Haus heute steht, und begann 1913 mit dem Bau des „Hauses meiner Träume.“
Lady Gordon vergab den Auftrag an einen Bauunternehmer aus Killorglin. Nur Arbeiter aus der Region wurden eingesetzt und alle verwendeten Materialien stammten aus Irland, mit Ausnahme der grün-grauen Dachschindeln aus Westmorland. Das Haus ist lang, niedrig, besitzt viele Giebel und in Steinpfosten eingelassene Flügelfenster „und niemals“, sagte Lady Gordon, hat es „neu ausgesehen“. Vielleicht lag dies an dem Sandstein in warmen Braunton oder Kerrys Klima, die dem Haus den Anschein verliehen, als habe es schon Jahrhunderte lang dem Regen und Wind getrotzt, Ihr Architekt Morley Horden, den sie mehr aufgrund seiner romantischen Erscheinung als wegen irgendwelcher herausragenden Fähigkeiten ausgewählt hatte, ließ sich von den verfallenen Kirchen inspirieren, die das einzige Überbleibsel einer uralten gälischen Zivilisation in Kerry sind.
