August Bank Holiday weekend, the 1st to the 3rd, will see crowds descend onto Cahersiveen for the annual Cahersiveen Music & Arts Festival. Musical performances range from folk to country and headlines acts include Robert Mizzel, The Stunning, 2 Time Polka and The Riptide Movement. Tickets for the concerts cost €10 for adults and €5 for kids for all 3 nights. Family activities during the day include street entertainment, fancy dress, a mini motor parade, children's Olympics and a busking competition for juniors and seniors.
One of the counties and countries biggest and best known festivals takes place across 5 days from the 15th to the 19th of August in Tralee. The event has been connecting the global Irish diaspora since its origins in 1959 through the annual competition of choosing a woman of Irish origin or lineage to represent the country as its ‘Rose’ for the year ahead. The ‘Rose’ essentially takes on an unofficial ambassador role both at home and abroad.
The main focus of the event takes place across 2 nights during the live TV selection process, however for those not lucky enough to get tickets, there are plenty of other events to keep them entertained. These include live concerts, carnivals, midnight fireworks and over 400 hours of scheduled entertainment. Key highlights this year include a food and craft market, an ‘air display’ and the ‘Rose’ parade.
One of the newer festivals that has sprung up in Kerry, is the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival in Waterville, where the silent movie star used to visit with his family, when he was alive. The community decided to set up a festival to honour the legendary star and still retains connections with his relatives who still visit the area. 2014 is the 4th annual year for the festival, which is growing year on year. The festival takes places from August 21st to 24th and highlights of the festival include a silent disco, live bands, film screenings and panel discussions, a comedy club and even a Guinness World Record Attempt for the largest gathering of people dressed as Charlie Chaplin.
So if you are considering a staycation, a hotel break, romantic short break, or golf break in Kerry and you are looking for entertainment this August, you will be spoiled for choice.
